    Bessie Coleman 1892-1926

Bessie was born 26th January 1892 in Atlanta Texas, one of 13 children to Susan and George Coleman who were sharecroppers. Bessie’s dream was to be a pilot and after she was denied entry to flying schools in the United States, not just because she was black but also the fact she was a woman, she taught herself French and went to France. Once there she studied at France’s Caudron Brother’s School of Aviation earning her license in just 7 months. This made her the first African

Hot off the press - Furlough vs Job Support Scheme

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, has made an amendment to the Job Support Scheme (JSS) which is due to begin on 1 November 2020. Here’s what has changed: Employees are no longer required to work 33% of their normal hours, this has been reduced to 20%. At the very least the government anticipates that it could be another 6 months before we can see a return to the workplace for many workers. With furlough ending and redundancies rising on an unprecedented scale, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, threw employer

Is the rule of law in jeopardy?

Last Tuesday the UK Internal Market Bill had its third reading passed by the House of Commons meaning that this proposed legislation will now move to the House of Lords. If this Bill is passed it will give ministers in the UK the power to rule against the Brexit Divorce deal. The Internal Market Bill is being proposed as a way to protect jobs and trading across the United Kingdom after the end of the Transition Period. This will ensure that British businesses will continue to

Severing a joint tenancy through written notice

Fantini v Scrutton & Ors The High Court have recently published a case exposing a pitfall where one party attempted to change their co-ownership in a property from a ‘joint tenancy’ to a ‘tenancy in common.’ You can co-own a property with other people in two ways. You can own it as 'joint tenants', where all the owners own 100% of the property jointly with the others. On the death of the co-owner, the property passes to the other co-owners by survivorship. Alternatively, you
