Being involved in a road traffic accident (RTA) can be distressing, no matter how minor it may seem at first. In those moments, it’s important to know what to do — both for your safety and to protect your legal and insurance position.
Here are 8 essential steps to follow if you’re involved in an RTA in the UK:
1. Stay Calm and Safe
First and foremost, stop your vehicle — it’s a criminal offence not to. If the car is drivable and it’s safe to do so, move it to the side of the road to avoid further danger. Turn on your hazard lights and take a moment to breathe.
2. Check for Injuries
Make sure everyone involved is safe. If anyone is injured, call 999 and request police or ambulance assistance as needed.
3. Exchange Information
You’re legally required to exchange:
· Name and address
· Insurance company and policy number
· Vehicle registration
If the driver isn’t the vehicle owner, make sure you get their details too.
4. Record the Scene
Use your phone to gather evidence:
· Take photos of all vehicle damage — not just your own
· Photograph the road layout, skid marks, traffic signs, and weather conditions
· Take pictures of any visible injuries
· Note the time, date, and location
· Collect witness contact details if available
5. Notify Your Insurer
Contact your insurance company as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours — even if you don’t intend to make a claim. Failing to do so could invalidate your cover.
6. Seek Medical Attention
Not all injuries are obvious at the scene. Whiplash and soft tissue injuries can take hours or days to emerge. Always get checked out by a medical professional and keep a copy of your records.
7. Keep Track of Your Recovery
Note how your injuries progress over time. Keep receipts for any treatment, medication, or related expenses — this information is vital if you later decide to make a claim.
8. Consider Legal Advice
If you’ve been injured, if the accident wasn’t your fault, or if there’s any dispute over liability, it’s wise to speak to a solicitor. We are here to guide you through the process and ensure your rights are protected.
